Ask The Professor
Q: Is Cybersquatting still a big business these days? Will I make some big bucks?
A:
People still make money buying and selling domains. However, there’s a difference between registering/selling domain names you were clever enough to find (like men.com or drugstore.com) and cybersquatting.
Cybersquatting happens when you register and attempt to sell a domain with pre-existing brand recognition, and it’s not your brand. If you register microsfft.com, you’re cybersquatting. Just ask Mike Rowe.
If you register a domain name that you thought up all by yourself, it’s yours to do with as you please. A lot of webmasters own domain names that they never use or don’t want anymore. Sometimes they’ve even built and maintained web sites to go with those domains. Most buyers want more than the domain. They want the traffic that comes from a pre-existing web site.
