A: As many as possible.
Whether you're trying to find a site or trying to get your site listed, don't limit yourself to one search engine. Each SE uses their own method (algorithm) to search, index and retrieve webpages. If you're having trouble finding a link you need from one SE, try another SE. If you can't get listed on the big SE, try submitting to a bunch of smaller search engines/directories.
