Ask The Professor
Q: What is exit traffic? Is it really the traffic that leaves my page? Why should I care? They are leaving.
A:
Yes, exit traffic is an accounting of the surfers leaving your page. Where your surfers go when they leave your page is very important. It can enlighten you to the viewing behaviors of your surfers and better yet, you can use your exit traffic to make money for you. For instance, the "exit" link on your warning page should always lead to either a site of your creation or to a sponsor. In fact, there are sponsors that will pay you for letting them pop-up a console to all those who exit your page. Just like a grocery store will display impulse-type items in the checkout line to increase sales, your exit link is your last chance to sell before your surfer heads out the door.
