Lesson #15
Understanding Niche Content
Written By Titmowse
Sex is an activity that takes place under blankets and porn is a blanket term when referring to online adult content. Online porn has more variables than the DNA couplings of a hundred thousand people. What people look for in terms of Internet sexual material is as finite as the individual searcher.
It's only natural for the beginning adult webmaster to choose to cover their bases by building general-purpose porn sites. They misapply the rules of mass marketing by supplying to too many of the masses. The fact is that after the newness of the Internet experience wears off for the surfer, they begin to search for very specified types of content to fulfill their fantasies. If you are deciding what kind of content to purchase in order to stock your adult web venue, a little bit of everything would have to be a hell of a lot.
By default the adult Internet has been divided up into a hierarchy that begins with the surfer. The surfer makes a choice between either hardcore or softcore content. Even these two classifications have fuzzy lines of demarcation, but the for intent of this lesson we will assume you know the difference.
After the initial delineations of hardcore and softcore, the guidelines of categorizing porn content is covered by the blanket term NICHE.
A niche in the adult Internet can be as broadly sought as the teen or gay niche or it can be as microscopic in popularity as the trampling fetish market. To say one deals in marketing niche porn is as abstract as saying one sells home merchandise. The possible product selection is endless. The bikini site is as much a niche site as one that's geared to lovers of inflatable rubber suits.
The primordial principle of marketing is you must know who you want to sell to. You can sell to everybody if you want but it's a Herculean task. The world has over six billion people on it. Even if you had the computing capabilities, you could never please them all sexually with your adult page, especially when you don't need to. Obscure sexual kinks can have great potential for you financially. Your customer base is far greater on the net than it could ever be in real life where a vendor is usually only able to sell within one geographical location.
You are selling porn to the adult world and that porn can be anything you want it to be. If only one person in your town gets off to rubbing balloons on their body, then the odds are there are a million others who enjoy the same out there on the Internet. Figure out who you want as a customer and then you can understand your niche market.
When you are shopping for or producing your adult content keep in mind that the designation NICHE is as sweeping as those of HARDCORE and SOFTCORE.
The reason the word NICHE has entered the dictionaries of adult marketeers is because of the sexual complexities of the human race. The general-purpose porn site could never be general enough because the average smut surfer does not exist.
