Lesson #02 Understanding the Realities of a Paysite

It is important to understand that an adult paysite is serious business. It’s one thing to sell porn for other people. When you are an affiliate webmaster, your responsibility to the surfer ends when they signup to your sponsor. When you are the one taking and making the money, it is all on you.

You’re responsible for making sure your paysite is online and running smooth 365 days a year. You’re the one who has to answer if a member has a problem or issue with your site. You’re the one who has to hire the designers and marketers. You’re the one who has to pay the taxes and the lawyers. You’re the one who must purchase and lease the content and make sure the site is updated. You’re the one with the awesome power and with awesome power comes awesome responsibility.

Say that at four-in-the-morning, one of your members can’t get a video to load. Say they look all over your page yet can’t find a contact email, phone number or help-desk link. Say that while you were sleeping peacefully, that member got pissed of, called his credit card company and began charge-back proceedings against you?

Say that your designer built a tour where the sales copy promises your paysite is updated every day. Then a member discovers you don’t update everyday. In fact, you haven’t updated in over six months. Guess what happens then? You guessed it. CHARGEBACK.

Imagine that your paysite, dedicated to the art of fisting, incites the ire of the US Department of Justice. They decide to make an example out of you and take you to court. Do you really think the ACLU is going to swoop down and save you? Think again. You’ll be paying the legal fees, the court fees and the fines.

What if you discover that a majority of your paysite content was actually stolen from another producer? Are you prepared to face the consequences? Are you ready to pay restitution to the real owner of the content? Are you primed to buy all new content?

How about them taxes? Multi-national corporations might get away with offshore tricks but the pornographer doesn’t have it so easy. What if, at the end of the year, you discover you owe tens of thousands of dollars in taxes? Can you afford the cost? Did you pay quarterly or did you wait until the last minute? Did you even bother to consult an accountant or tax attorney?

These are not imagined scenarios. These are the very real issues facing an adult paysite owner. We’re not trying to discourage your dream by telling you these things. We just want you to understand that this isn’t playtime. This isn’t play money. Owning an adult paysite is a lofty obligation and if you’re not prepared, it’s going to be a horrid nightmare.
