Lesson #10 Creating Doorway Page Templates
    Written By Cyndalie

I know that many of you esteemed Traffic Lounge readers may be wondering why I would offer valuable information about search engine marketing so openly. The truth is, search engines really are not all that hard to understand, and forming an easy routine based on an arsenal you have built up over time makes it all the easier to learn and stay on top. SEO's have a high burnout rate because it seems like the search engine landscape is always changing, sometimes unpredictably, and impossible to reason why things may not be going your way.

In the past lessons of Traffic Lounge I have tried to create a picture in your minds of how search engines work, what they look for, and get it into your heads that overkill is not the answer. By creating doorway pages based on templates you know by creation date can help you to evolve your pages to hit more keyword variations and more algorithms. Don't see it as a changing landscape; see it as a landscape that cycles, and you can be ranking somewhere all year 'round for steady business all year long. Make your pages and rankings work for you, and they will peak over time.

    Creating Templates

When you begin to create doorway page templates, start with the basic factors of a page we have reviewed and keep your code simple. Use header fonts <h1>-<h5> for the top lines of text and bolded elements on the page. Avoid using links titled "Enter Here" or "Click Here"; indicators suggest this set's a red flag in engines like Google that the page is a doorway. Try to vary your link destinations to the most relevant page of your site according to keyword, use footer text links like “Home” to go to the main index page of our primary traffic target. Try to cross-link to other promotional domains, relevant sites you promote, or main pages of the site you are promoting and use the most relevant key phrase for that link. Your pages can begin to lend relevance to one another and updating cross links (found later in this article) will be one of the most time consuming tasks on your list.

    Variables

Assign variables that you will come to know and recognize. Variables will allow us to easily create pages using search and replace functions found in Text Editors (NotePad Lite), or even better, DreamWeaver. Keep your variables throughout your templates consistent. These are the variables that work best for me. Note that Key1-Key4 is ordered in priority and keyword competition.

[key1] - [key4]: Keywords or phrases you want to rank for. Can be reduced or expanded according to preference.

[link]: The http destination link. Can be expanded to [link1]-[link4]

[image] : Http path to logo, primary image, or banner for the page. Can be expanded as needed. Such as [image1] = logo [image2] = enter button

[email] : Email address for the page.

I can only show you and hope that you will learn by example. The following is a link to a base doorway page template you may use, or use to help evolve your own. Make 4 pages varying keywords using this page and then begin to modify the design, create keyword content using the [key] variables and you are on your way to a Doorway page evolution – rankings are only a click away!

    Doorway Evolution

Like I mentioned, save the template and adjust it to fit your preferred color scheme and textual modifications. If you will be using one primary image, go ahead and set it and the email info.

Save it as Template-Date.html. Then attempt your first search and replace. Once you have replaced all variables ([key1] = fetish pics), review and save your page as a page of your site and name it a relevant keyword on the page. Next, review your page and check your content, Title, Description, and keywords – make sure it makes sense! Again, avoid using “Enter Here” or “Click here” anywhere in you page. Say something like “Thank you for searching for “[key1]” (yes, using quotes for phrases is a good idea), please select the image above to begin your visit to our [key2] website.” In fact, varying the way you display your keyword text, like bolding a [key] or setting it a different color, will help it stand out in the code to the search engine. Some people search in “quotes” for a specific phrase, and it can become a match made in heaven.

Once you make a few doorway pages and submit them, the next batch you do open you template and modify it a bit. Put some text in tables or vary the overall design. Save it as Template-date.htm and you will have a blue print of your search engine efforts over time and when those pages start ranking you know you're on the right track. Do not make more than 5 pages from each template per domain name. Your doorways will evolve with the algorithms and over time, you won't have to work so hard for high rankings.
