You don’t have to own a paysite to make money from Internet porn. You don’t have to own a TGP or a top list or even be a very good webmaster in order to enjoy the riches the adult Internet has to offer.

If you’ve been working in cyberporn for a while, you’ve probably come to realize that there is a least one thing you’re good at. You might be adept at layout or graphic design. You could be superior at search engine optimization or site promotion. Your talent might be video editing or programming. Whatever your gift is, you know what it is and that you can do it as well or better than most.

While it’s important to have a working knowledge of all aspects of this business, it’s unreasonable to expect anyone to be the master of all. There’s too much to learn. The adult Internet involves marketing and design. The adult net needs programmers, technicians and troubleshooters. Cyberporn requires photographers, editors, and models. You can’t get the surfers without SEO or traffic brokers. You can’t take the money without processors. You can’t run a decent paysite or sponsor program without decent customer support. You can’t have tutorials, lessons or articles (like this one) without writers.

Before the Industrial Revolution the majority of the people of the world had a patch of land where they built their own houses, grew their own food and sewed their own clothes. Then came the cotton gin, the steam and internal combustion engines, the tractor, the airplane and electricity. The entire human race was able to throw off the anchor of the farm and sail into the age of specialization.

The adult Internet is moving into it’s own age of specialization. Used to be an adult webmaster had to do it all. They had to build the website, create the content for the website, buy and maintain the server to host the website. An Internet pornographer had to be a marketer, a customer support specialist plus they had to get their own merchant account and handle their own payment processing as well. The adult webmasters of the late nineties were truly supermen and women.

Today the adult Internet is a living, whole, tangible entity. Our field had expanded from a collection of independent operators into a legitimate industry. Now we have big, medium and little companies. There are content providers who sell to site owners who buy space on hosts. There are programmers who write sit their cubicles and channel the code. There are technicians who bitch and moan and kick the servers. There are site designers and copywriters who court their muses while battling their deadlines. There are image and video editors and content producers who make the models look good who make all that porn look easy. There are the banks and the credit card companies and the Internet Payment Service Providers. All of these unique, separate entities need and feed each other because of the demand for cyber smut by the surfing populace. Online porn is alive, self-sustaining and able to rebound from the attacks on our right to run our businesses legally.

If you want to be a huge player, then you’ll probably want to take the path of diversification. But if you want to continue to be singly self-employed or stay a simple, small team you might want to consider specialization.

Specialization is when you do one thing that others need so much they’re willing to pay for it. As an example:

A video content provider has to have a good editor to cut and encode the porn for the buyers and masses. While a cameraman might be skilled at the shot, they might not be the best at finishing the product. Therefore, such a content provider needs to find and pay another for the special skill of editing. That skilled editor might possibly be an independent contractor, who does nothing but what he/she is good at, editing video.

Another example -on a grander scale- is the diversified, huge player mentioned above. The large adult network will hire employees with various specialized proficiencies. Even the median adult operator employs a couple of people or contracts out to specialized services and providers.

If you’ve been at this porn stuff for a while you’ve probably realized how much there is to know and that you might never know it all. You might already be able to see that if you want to be a big dog, you’ll have to work your ass off, spend shitloads of money and probably sacrifice your personal life just to stay solvent. If you’ve been slinging smut for any length of time you’re beginning to notice the salary caps and financial roadblocks affecting the small-time webmaster. If you’ve been thinking how to survive the evolution, think about specialization.
