When I first started in the adult Internet I had these great visions of a master porn network that would fly to the highest reaches of cyber-fame. I was going to include everything needed for the horny surfer. I signed up for buttloads of sponsor programs. I snagged counters and search buttons. I applied to all the lists. I at one time had free host accounts at over ten different providers. I would push one type of porn or program and dump it for the next. I would be inspired by some new method of smut riches and dump whatever I was doing to switch gears. I was all over the place and going nowhere.

Making a living in the adult Internet is never easy. Simply because you can provide a product that is high in demand does not mean that product sells itself. While the basic rules of marketing apply on the net, it's still a new medium full of unknown variables. Even those who have been successful in print/video/film porn are having difficulty acclimating to the web. Surfers want porn but they want a different kind of porn than do from home videos and smutty magazines.

I'm not saying that web surfers are depraved degenerates that have to see sick, bizarre imagery in order to achieve sexual pleasure. The basic truth is that the web sells hardcore; hardcore straight sex, hardcore gay sex, hardcore bondage sex and all the other exotic sex one can think of. This is the kind of porn Joe average can only get through mail-order or by taking the chance of being outed at the dirty smut shop. In America at least, one cannot purchase hardcore porn at the local convenience store. They can buy that crappy fake hardcore with no money shots, but not real hardcore. The net brings what the horndogs want straight to their desktops. Yes, surfers will pay for softcore. Great many of them prefer softcore that's why this is all so complicated. On the web, you can't just give them what they want. You have to lead them to it. Much like the real world forces adult stores to house themselves in approved districts that are off the tour path, porn has to hide from plain site on the Internet. It's your job as an adult webmaster to bring your customers to the door of your web.

The best way to do this is to refine your endeavor. Pick one type of smut you like or one type of site and stick with it. The massive porn empire can come later. If you seriously want to step from square one to general porn paysite, you better have at least 100,000 dollars to blow. No matter your site's quality or how magic the keywords in your Meta Tags are, a beginner with too much to offer is still a beginner. Even the free general porn sites that work either lead to the owner's paysite or are TGPs and Top Lists. TGPs and Top Lists require a lot of knowledge of how this industry to works to be successful.

Don't make the mistake of thinking if you cover all the bases, something will surely pay off. Find a niche you like. If you like Interracial sex sell that, promote that and try to understand the mind of your collective audience. Don't go veering off into other niches until you truly understand the one you are presently working on. Niches perform better for the beginning adult webmaster. You don't have to fight with mondo paysites for decent placement on search engines. You don't have to fight with a thousand other general-purpose free site owners who got on the net ahead of you.

I learned the hard way, but you don't have to. You have enough to learn. Decide what one thing you like to see when it comes to smut. Build your page around it. Find sponsors for it. Submit to TGPs and Top Lists that have categories for it. Type keywords into your Meta Tags that have to do with it. Submit to the right subdirectories on Search sites. Like the commercial says, pick one thing and do it well.
