Are you like me? Did you have that defining moment when you realized the endless possibilities available to you because of the Internet? The information, the entertainment, the financial potential. Did you feel that thunderclap like I did?
I remember it well. I just knew. I just knew that this virtual reality was here to stay. I knew the world would come to depend on the net just like they did television and movies and magazines. I knew that the net delivered more with instant worldwide communication and e-commerce. I knew for a fact that someday some motherfuckers were gonna be bloody rich because of the Internet. I knew the net was the future and I wanted to be a part of it.
That moment was over seven years ago and it’s taken me most of this time to figure out exactly how I would find my place in the future. I figured out almost at the start that I loved making web pages. I knew I was pretty good at self-promotion. I had a bit of talent for graphic design. I was extremely good with text. I understood basic layout concepts like cleanliness and ease of navigation. I had all the makings of a newbie adult webmaster but it took me about two years of experimenting in non-adult before I turned to porn.
After entering online adult, I mistakenly thought I had found my absolute route. I knew that sex sells. I knew how to make web pages. I knew I could make money by selling porn from my web pages. My previous online experience taught me about free hosts. I figured there must be an adult version of a free host and I found one through a search engine. I went there and signed up for an account. I read the help tutorials and joined their message board. I built my first site and was sure that I had indeed found my cyber pot of gold.
Naturally, my first adult site failed. It had a cute name and a clever theme. I managed to get it indexed on search engines and acquired some pretty decent link trades for a newbie. The problem was I didn’t make a single penny from that first site. The site was too general and without direction. I didn’t know my market. I didn’t know what the different markets were. I didn’t know there were different markets to begin with. I tried on new sponsors as if I was shopping for shoes. I kept trying to create the perfect, ultimate site unaware of the fact that there was no such thing. I did the gallery submission thing and started to make money but I found the experience unfulfilling.
I bought a digital camera and took pics of myself and used them for site content. Then, I decided that I didn’t want to be a porn model. I used my writing skills and wrote eight or so chapters of an adult novel. Then I started to write erotic short stories. Because of my stories I got into the adult text business. I wrote fake bios for models on paysites. I wrote tour copy and sales copy. One day, I wrote an article about the importance of words on adult pages. I sent it to Cozy Frog. C-Pimp (the Head Frog) asked me if I wanted to work for Cozy, I said yes. I had at last found my signature. I was a writer. I was a writer for Cozy. That was in the summer of 2001. It had taken me three years in the adult Internet to find my place.
What about you? What makes you unique? What sets you apart from all the others? What do you do best? Are you an expert at layout? Do you have a talent for graphics? Are you a champion at closing a deal? Perhaps you can write a program that will save money. Whatever it may be, your strength will always be your best asset. The smartest thing you can do is to know yourself. Learn what you like and promote it. Determine what part of this business you want to be associated with and promote yourself. Figure out what the adult Internet needs that you can provide and then provide it. There are thousands of adult webmasters but there’s only one of you. When you know who you are, you’ll get where you want.
