Hooray for ASACP!

Try this sometime. Go to Google or AllTheWeb. Click on the News tab. Now, type in the word porn and click the submit button. Notice how most of the results are stories about child porn?
What does that say about our industry? What does it say about the media? The media has a reputation for sensationalism. Our industry has a reputation for destroying the morals of humanity. These two perceptions collide when you go looking for news stories about porn on a search engine. Legitimate Internet porn is obscured by tabloid journalistic attempts to spread fear and misinformation about our industry. Child porn exists but we are not the propagators of it. We know it’s a scourge and we hate it more than anyone because we are blamed for it’s existence.
It’s hard enough that so many of us live in communities than shun us. It’s sad that there are charities that won’t take our donations. It’s scary that governments consider us the biggest threat next to terrorism. Banks don’t want to deal with us. Credit card companies push us around. Nobody wants to hear that we are normal people with families and morals. No one cares that adult sponsors and hosts forbid illegal acts. Try to tell the uninitiated that we are a self-policing and you’ll probably get a look of disbelief.
Aren’t you tired of it? Aren’t you sick to death of explaining that you act in accordance with the law and no, you don’t deal in kiddie porn? Wouldn’t you love to be able to do something to change the opinions of the public and the press about us? If there were something you could do to show the world that the adult Internet and CP scumbags are completely different entities, would you?
Of course you would and you can. Adult Sites Against Child Pornography (ASACP) began in 1996. The goal of ASACP is to provide a safe place for adult webmasters and the general public to report child porn.
When a person encounters a site they feel contains underage content, they often tell no one. It’s not that those who see CP don’t want it eliminated and it’s creators/distributors prosecuted. Rather that lack of reportage is due to fear of repercussion from law enforcement. Horror stories abound of people who find CP, report it and then end up getting their own sites shut down or
worse, land in jail. The recent case of The Who’s Pete Townshend is a prime example of why people are afraid to report CP to legal authorities. He claims he wanted to contact authorities when
he first saw CP on the net. His lawyer told him not to do that. So, instead he "researched" on his own and used his credit card to enter a CP site. Now Townshend is up on charges and his reputation is forever tarnished. If he had known about ASACP, he would have had a safe place where he could report and offending site.
ASCAP is safe because it’s not a government or law enforcement facility. ASACP is safe because Alec Helmy of HELMY Enterprises started it. ASACP is safe because they are the ones who will look at the reported site and determine if it contains actual child porn. ASCAP is safe because they will then report the site to the FBI for you. ASCAP is safe because they have reported over 30,000 CP sites to the FBI and US Customs Bureau. ASCAP is safe because they’ve gotten over 9000 sites shut down without invading the privacy of honorable citizens who report to them.
ASACP is proof that the adult Internet despises CP and is doing something to stop it. ASACP is our best face. When you see or read a news story about child porn, write a letter to the editor and tell them about ASACP. If you get a questionable link in your email or see a site that uses underage content report it to ASACP. Take the time to visit the ASACP site to learn more about what they do and how you can get your site ASACP approved. Support ASACP and promote their cause. If enough of us work to bring ASACP to the forefront, the day may come when the public and the media realize that the adult Internet is on their side in the fight against child porn.
